Hello and welcome! My name is Beth Chinderle and I am an elementary math educator and modern quilter based in Austin, Texas. I knew as early as 3rd grade that my calling in life was to be a teacher. Little did I know this adolescent dream would evolve into a sincere passion for math along with the perfect application of this creative subject - sewing! I am a member of the Austin Modern Quilt Guild and served for two years as the Vice President of Events in 2014-15. I love to push myself creatively and learning how to sew has been and continues to be my best learning journey to date.
MY SEWING JOURNEY
It was spring in 2008 and my 4th grade students were restless. I wanted to get their attention for a lesson with someone talking other than me, so that night I hand stitched a puppet using an old pillowcase. Petunia Erin was born! Right away, I loved the application of mathematics while sewing so I decided to purchase an inexpensive sewing machine. Shortly after I bought my machine, a dear friend gave me a rail fence quilt pattern and in June 2012 my first quilt was finished!
MY MATH JOURNEY
After studying elementary education at Illinois State University, I relocated to Austin, Texas to teach math differently than I was traditionally taught. A few years later I became an elementary math curriculum specialist for a district of nearly 40,000 students. Through this decade of experience, I have had the opportunity to learn with and from hundreds of educators - teachers, instructional coaches, principals - as well as the community. Currently, I have the opportunity to travel and facilitate elementary math workshops across the United States. These experiences have been a true joy!
THE MATHEMACHICKEN π
During the pandemic, I met a new friend named The Mathemachicken! She is a comedi-hen who tells hilarious yolks, loves her alarm cluck and math cluck-ulators, and spends many hours flapping around in the coop with all her variety of friends.
